With the arrival of Memorial Day weekend, summer is right around the corner so its time to lighten up, kick back and enjoy.

From family reunions and company picnics to neighborhood barbecues and pool parties, summer is social. And when we get together, what do we love to do? Eat.

With fresh fruits and vegetables in abundance, summer fare can taste great and help you stay healthy. Make the most of the season by eating well, getting out there to exercise and taking the time to chill.

Here are a few ideas to kick start your healthy summer:

Eat fresh: Grow it yourself or visit your local farmer’s market and stock up on fresh fruits and veggies. Create a rainbow of color with Fruit skewers or try some grilled veggie kabobs. And if you have crave something sweet, cut up the watermelon, dice up the pineapple or get some strawberries.

Get moving: Wake up early to beat the heat and go for a walk or jog. If the day starts to sizzle, get wet and splash around in a pool, lake, river or ocean. Go for a bike ride, a hike or a paddle in a kayak or canoe. Take advantage of the weather and enjoy the outdoors. Put the sunscreen on before you go out and reapply it every two hours.

Hydrate: It’s hot out there so don’t forget to drink plenty of water. Whether you are working out or just hanging out, you need to stay hydrated. Don’t wait until you feel thirsty. Remind yourself to drink water. Make Stay Hydrated one of your CraveMate or free CraveMateLite goals and set reminders to alert you.

Chill: Take time to enjoy the slower pace of summer. Switch off the stress for even a short time with relaxation techniques, such as yoga or meditation. The health benefits include lower blood pressure, greater emotional balance, a feeling of calm and a boosted immune system.

Rest: Whether you lie out on the hammock, crash on the beach or get to bed at a reasonable hour, a good night’s sleep can help you stay healthy. Regular, quality sleep is good for your brain, letting you re-charge for the next day. It contributes to your emotional and physical well-being and improves learning. Plus, when you get enough sleep you function better. Your performance improves and you are more productive.

Have a great summer and make it a healthy one.
